Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
