We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard biological terror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.
A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The narrative begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.
The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
Both characters confront the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
